Leg cramping may seem benign enough in itself, but in some cases, it can represent an underlying issue affecting your vascular health. Leg cramping is one of the symptoms of varicose veins, and in more advanced cases, can significantly disrupt your comfort, daily activity level, and even sleep quality.

If this sounds like you, our friendly and knowledgeable team at the Vain Care Center is here to help you find lasting relief. Serving Lima, Celina, and the greater Auglaize County, Dr. Manu B. Aggarwal and her team will partner with you to create a personalized approach that addresses those nagging leg cramps at the source.

What Is Leg Cramping?

Like elsewhere in the body, leg cramping is characterized by unwanted muscle contractions, causing a painful tightening sensation. While cramps can affect anyone, and are often not related to varicose veins or other venous conditions, they are a telltale sign of varicose veins.

In fact, leg cramping is one of the most frequently reported symptoms by our varicose vein patients. Typically, they are more apparent and severe after long periods of standing or sitting. This is because these activities increase the pooling of blood in your extremities.

While anyone can experience leg cramps, it’s important to understand the characteristics unique to varicose-vein-related cramping, as this distinction will help you determine whether or not you need to seek treatment. If your leg cramps follow this pattern, they may be a sign of varicose veins:

  • Cramps that worsen after prolonged periods of sitting or standing
  • Cramps that worsen in the evening hours
  • Cramps that disrupt sleep

As always, the best practice when determining the cause of your leg cramps is to seek medical attention.

What Causes Leg Cramping in Vein Insufficiency Patients?

Outside of muscle fatigue and dehydration, the most common vascular cause of leg cramping is chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). When the one-way backflow prevention valves in your veins become weakened or damaged, blood can pool in your lower extremities.

As the fluid builds up, pressure in the vein grows, irritating the surrounding muscles and nerves. The muscles contract involuntarily in response, resulting in cramps. Both CVI and varicose veins can cause muscle cramps through this mechanism.

There are several other causes and contributors to leg cramps, whether working in tandem with venous insufficiency or independently of it, including the following:

  • Pregnancy-related circulatory changes
  • Effects of aging on vein function
  • Obesity
  • Family history of vein disease
  • Hormonal changes

Patients with leg cramps due to CVI are also likely to experience skin changes (thinning, easily bruised or broken skin around the problem veins), a sensation of heaviness affecting the legs, and restless legs syndrome.

How Is Leg Cramping Treated?

From the first point of contact to well after your treatment, our team at the Vein Care Center is committed to transparency and trust, which is why we emphasize patient education from the first appointment and beyond.

Our diagnostic process begins with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and more. We will use an advanced ultrasound imaging platform to determine whether or not your leg cramping is caused by a problem with the underlying veins.

Imaging results will inform your treatment path. If your leg cramps are associated with an underlying vein issue, your treatment may involve compression therapy, endovenous laser, sclerotherapy, or a combination.

01 /
Compression Therapy

Compression therapy uses medical-grade compression stockings to facilitate blood flow by applying pressure to the legs.

02 /
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT)

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) seals targeted veins using laser energy, allowing the blood flow to be rerouted through healthier blood vessels while the treated vein gradually fades away.

03 /
Sclerotherapy

  • Sclerotherapy also seals targeted veins, but with a different mechanism. Instead of an energy-based approach, this treatment uses a solution to close the walls of the vein on each other. The solution is carefully injected, the vein is sealed, and blood is rerouted.
