What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that typically forms in the deep veins of the lower leg or calf. A DVT blocks blood flow and may cause leg pain or swelling. At times, however, there are no symptoms at all. While DVT is not usually life-threatening, if the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs it can cause a potentially fatal condition called a pulmonary embolism.

Generally, a DVT is caused by a combination of two out of three underlying conditions:

  • Slow or sluggish blood flow through a major vein
  • A tendency for a person’s blood to clot quickly, which is often hereditary
  • Irritation/inflammation of the lining surface of the vein

What Are the Risk Factors for Deep Vein Thrombosis?

There are many factors that can contribute to the development of deep vein thrombosis. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chances of developing DVT:

  • Prolonged sitting or restricted mobility such as long-distance travel
  • Age over 40
  • Surgery (especially orthopedic) or major injury
  • Excessive weight
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Varicose veins
  • Cancer
  • High estrogen states, such as pregnancy or if using birth control pills
  • Prolonged bed rest or immobility

How Is Deep Vein Thrombosis Diagnosed?

Diagnosing DVT is painless and risk-free with our state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment at the Vein Care Center. Depending on your medical history and health, Dr. Aggarwal may recommend other tests as well.

What Are the Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Nearly half of all cases of DVT have NO symptoms. When symptoms are present, they include leg pain and tenderness, swelling in the leg, skin that is warm to the touch and redness.

Can Deep Vein Thrombosis Cause Other Complications?

Unfortunately, yes. Along with the possibility of developing a pulmonary embolism, as many as a third of patients with DVT develop post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), a long-term complication that causes chronic pain, swelling, discoloration and sometimes open ulcers.

Patients who have had a DVT in the past are also at higher risk of developing another.

Can Deep Vein Thrombosis Be Prevented?

There are a number of preventative measures you can take to prevent a DVT:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Stretch and move legs when traveling
  • Quit smoking
  • Maintain a normal body weight
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Wear compression stockings or socks, which reduces the risk of DVT or complications by 50 percent
