AviClear uses a 1726 nm wavelength laser to reduce the activity of the sebaceous glands, which produce the oil (sebum) responsible for clogging pores and causing acne. After the treatment, your skin produces less oil and your pores are clearer, allowing your acne to get — and stay — better.
Most acne treatments target other things that lead to breakouts. AviClear is unique among acne treatments because it targets sebum production and does not present the challenges that come with topical or oral acne medications.

In addition to AviClear, we also offer Cutera’s Excel V laser at the Vein Care Center. Both devices can be used to treat acne. The key difference between them is the way they reduce breakouts. While AviClear focuses on reducing sebum production, Excel V targets bacteria, another significant contributor to acne.
Both treatments can be very effective for the right person. A consultation will decide which approach will be most beneficial for your skin.
An AviClear treatment starts with cleansing your skin and applying a small amount of water to improve contact. Once your skin is prepped, your provider will sweep the treatment area with the device’s sapphire tip, similar to the way we use many other energy-based devices. We treat the area slowly and methodically to ensure it is covered evenly. Treatments typically last 30 minutes.
AviClear is equipped with sapphire skin cooling technology to keep your skin at a comfortable temperature during treatment. You may notice a mild snapping sensation while the laser is active. In clinical studies, participants tolerated the treatment well without utilizing pain mitigation.
There is no downtime after an AviClear procedure. Mild side effects such as redness or inflammation are normal but usually fade quickly. You can resume your daily activities immediately after treatment and may continue your existing acne skincare routine. Wear sunscreen daily as your skin’s photosensitivity may increase while undergoing any laser-based treatment.
The recommended AviClear treatment protocol consists of three 30-minute treatment sessions. Appointments are scheduled once per month over three months.
In clinical studies, 80% of patients saw at least half of their acne resolve in the first three months following their AviClear treatment. The treatment reduces the intensity and duration of current and future breakout episodes, while also making breakouts more infrequent. Clinical studies suggest that your results may continue to improve with time — even several months after the protocol is finished — demonstrating the long-term efficacy of the AviClear acne treatment.
AviClear works for mild, moderate and severe acne. It is suitable for all types of acne (including comedonal acne — whiteheads and blackheads), as well as all skin types and tones. It is one of the most versatile acne treatments available today.
