The Vein Care Center team, under the expert guidance of Dr. Aggarwal, has the knowledge and expertise to treat a wide range of skin growths and skin conditions. We recommend that patients undergo a yearly skin check with a board-certified dermatologist to keep fully up to date on the health of their skin. We offer effective treatments to remove unwanted benign skin lesions and improve the overall appearance of your skin. To better serve our patients, we have offices across Ohio in the cities of Lima, Celina, and Findlay.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a non-surgical, in-office procedure that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy small skin lesions.

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

The goal of cryotherapy is to cause localized frostbite to an unwanted skin lesion. Within a few seconds of administering liquid nitrogen, the destruction of the lesion begins. The freezing process kills the tissue, stops blood flow to the lesion and stimulates new skin growth to occur.

What Skin Conditions are Treated with Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is used to treat straight-forward skin lesions, such as:

If a skin lesion is cancerous or its origin is unknown, cryotherapy should not be used. A biopsy is a better option for questionable lesions. Any precancerous growths should be evaluated first before undergoing a more extensive excision process to remove them.
Birthmarks, moles, age spots and hemangiomas should not be treated with cryotherapy as these skin conditions will most likely return after this particular treatment. We provide effective alternative treatments for these conditions, including well-tolerated laser procedures.

The Cryotherapy Procedure

A cryogun is the preferred delivery method for liquid nitrogen. The cryogun directs a steady stream of liquid nitrogen onto the lesion. A cotton swab is an alternative delivery method whereby the swab is soaked in liquid nitrogen and then held in place on the lesion. For either approach, the patient may feel a burning or stinging sensation while the liquid nitrogen is applied. This discomfort can last a few seconds up to half a minute, depending on the size of the lesion. When the application of the liquid nitrogen is stopped, the discomfort will stop. Over the next few days, the lesion will scab over, slough off and new skin will grow in its place. No bandages are necessary. Avoid the sun, wear sunscreen and do not pick at the treated area to ensure proper healing. We will also suggest certain skincare products that can promote healing in the treated area.
Patients may encounter mild side effects, such as crusting, redness or clear drainage at the treatment site(s). However, in rare instances, serious side effects can occur, including infection, pigment changes, severe blistering, scarring, nerve damage or pain that interferes with daily activities. Call the Vein Care Center at any time if you have questions or concerns.
