At the Vein Care Center in Lima, OH, we regularly perform skin tag removal on nearly any area of the body with safe and tested methods. If you are a resident of Lima, Celina or any Auglaize County community, contact us today to schedule your appointment.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags, also called “acrochordons,” are non-cancerous skin growths that usually form in areas where skin folds, such as the armpits, neck, groin and eyelids. They are made up of loose collagen fibers and blood vessels. It is estimated that 50 to 60% of all adults will develop skin tags during their lifetime.

Skin tags are usually small, although they can occasionally grow large. They are typically skin-colored, brown or, rarely, reddish in color. They can appear alone or in clusters and tend to hang loosely from the skin.

Skin tags can sometimes be confused for warts. However, unlike warts, skin tags have a smooth and soft surface, hang off the skin and are not contagious.

Most of the time, skin tags are merely unsightly and annoying. In some cases, however, they can be bothersome and distressing.

What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tags happen when extra cells develop in the top layers of the skin. They seem to result from frequent friction between folds of skin since they tend to appear in areas where the skin rubs against itself. They most commonly occur in your 40s and rarely in children and the elderly. Certain risk factors have been associated with skin tags, including:

  • Elevated blood lipids
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic factors

However, some people seem to develop skin tags for no apparent reason.

How Is Skin Tag Removal Performed?

Skin tag removal should be performed by a medical professional to avoid excessive bleeding, ulceration and infection. At the Vein Care Center, we remove skin tags with one of the following methods:

Excision

A snip excision or shave removal are two surgical procedures used to remove skin tags. We first administer a local anesthetic to make the area numb and then either move a sharp razor across the skin or use surgical scissors to cut away the skin growth. Sutures or bandages are not needed.

Cauterization

Another option for skin tag removal is to burn the skin tag using an electric current, laser or a caustic chemical. This type of treatment causes the skin tag to fall off while the underlying skin and blood vessels become sealed.

Cryosurgery

A third way to destroy skin tags is by freezing them. Cryosurgery is the application of cold temperatures to abnormal growths like skin tags, usually using liquid nitrogen or some type of gas.

Skin tag removal is a quick, low-risk procedure. A small scar can form after treatment that becomes less noticeable after several months.

Skin Tag Removal Aftercare

Skin tag removal typically leaves a tiny wound in the skin that can bleed for a few minutes. Your provider will apply mild pressure to the skin to stop the bleeding and monitor the area for a few minutes.

At home, it is important to follow post-treatment instructions to prevent excessive bleeding and infections. These instructions usually include the following tips:

  • Keep the area bandaged for up to 48 hours
  • Apply an antibiotic ointment once daily
  • Clean the area with soap and water twice daily
  • Avoid applying alcohol and other harsh skincare ingredients
  • Come to your scheduled follow-up appointment

In some cases, you may need to keep the area dry for 48 hours before cleaning it with soap and water.
