What Is Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

Venous stasis dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin, usually, on the lower extremities, that results from an underlying vein disease such as chronic venous insufficiency.

What Are the Signs of Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

Symptoms of venous stasis dermatitis may appear in stages or suddenly. They include:

  • Inflamed, irritated skin
  • Redness, itching
  • Dry, scaly, flaky skin
  • Open wounds or sores
  • Weeping fluid
  • Scabbing or crusting
  • Discoloration
  • Feelings of heaviness, achiness or restlessness in the legs
  • In early stages, thinning skin, particularly near the ankles
  • In later stages, a leather-like appearance

What Are the Risk Factors for Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

Venous stasis dermatitis most often occurs in middle-aged or older patients, usually those over age 50. It is also more common in women than in men.

Other factors that can increase your risk of developing venous stasis dermatitis include:

  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Kidney failure
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Previous blood clot or clots
  • Varicose veins
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Prior injury to the area

How Is Venous Stasis Dermatitis Treated?

Once your underlying vein disease is treated, and circulation improves, oxygen-rich blood will begin the healing process and prevent further damage. Please see our Vein Treatments page to read more about the vein treatment options available at the Vein Care Center.

You may also be advised to wear compression stockings to reduce swelling and improve blood flow. Dr. Aggarwal may also prescribe medication to address pain symptoms, as well as medications to apply topically to the affected area.

Venous stasis dermatitis can cause serious complications and lead to painful skin ulcers. That’s why it’s important to be treated by an expert in vein diseases and disorders.
