What Is Venous Eczema?

Venous eczema (stasis dermatitis) is a skin issue characterized by inflammation. It occurs when poor circulation in the veins leads to fluid buildup in the lower legs. Over time, the skin may become thickened, discolored and prone to open sores.

Corticosteroid creams or ointments can be applied to soothe inflammation, relieve itching and reduce redness. Moisturizing creams are also recommended to prevent the skin from becoming dry and cracked.

For more severe cases, treating the underlying venous insufficiency is vital. The Vein Care Center offers advanced treatments like:

  • Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT): This minimally invasive procedure uses laser energy to seal faulty veins, improving blood flow and reducing pressure in the veins that contribute to venous eczema.
  • Sclerotherapy: This treatment involves injecting a sclerosant (sclerosing solution) into the affected veins to close them off and reroute blood to healthier veins.
