When leg swelling progresses from a minor inconvenience to a legitimate health concern, Dr. Manu B. Aggarwal, MHSA, and her team at the Vein Care Center are here to provide a safe, targeted treatment.

What Causes Leg Swelling?

Technically termed “peripheral edema,” leg swelling is caused by a buildup of excess fluid in your lower extremities. Swelling can range in severity from mild, localized puffiness (typically around the ankles and feet) to more advanced cases that encompass the entire leg. In many cases, simply standing or sitting for long periods of time can cause leg swelling.

In other cases, consistent leg swelling (especially that not associated with activity) may be a sign that your body is not properly cycling fluid through its network of lymphatic drainage pathways or blood vessels. When the lymphatic system is involved, unwanted fluid retention in the legs is called lymphedema.

What Is Lymphedema?

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, not unlike the circulatory system, that works alongside the circulatory system to move excess fluid and waste from the tissues back into the bloodstream. Lymphedema is a “traffic jam” of fluid that builds up within the lymphatic system, causing leg swelling.

Additional symptoms associated with lymphedema include:

  • Pain
  • Stretched or shiny skin
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Aching or stiff joints
  • Numbness

How Is Leg Swelling Treated?

The Vein Care Center offers a comprehensive range of treatments that can approach leg swelling in multiple ways, depending on the underlying cause and your unique circumstances.

These treatment approaches include:

01 /
Lymphatic therapy

Patients with lymphedema-related leg swelling benefit from manual lymphatic drainage, a massage-like treatment that facilitates the movement of pooled lymph fluid through the lymphatic system.

02 /
Advanced venous treatments

If the swelling is caused by venous insufficiency, meaning the veins are unable to efficiently return blood to the heart (resulting in swelling as fluid pools in the legs), Dr. Aggarwal offers minimally invasive endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and sclerotherapy.

03 /
Lifestyle and activity modification

Elevating the legs, engaging in certain exercises (especially those that require calf muscle activity), and using properly fitted medical-grade stockings can help many patients significantly improve their leg swelling.
