What Is Endovenous Laser Treatment?

Also commonly known as Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation (EVLT), this laser treatment is a highly effective and minimally invasive method of correcting underlying veins that cause varicose and spider veins. This revolutionary method of treating varicose veins has all but eliminated vein stripping surgery, a procedure that is both invasive and often unsuccessful. Endovenous laser treatment has an approximate 98 percent success rate.

How Is Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) Performed?

EVLT is a quick outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. Prior to your laser ablation procedure, you will be provided with a prescription topical numbing cream that will numb the area(s) to be treated. During the procedure, a small catheter is gently inserted into the vein using ultrasound to ensure correct placement. When the catheter is in place, a small laser fiber is introduced through the catheter. The laser fiber releases small amounts of laser energy, which “ablates,” or damages, the vein through heat. Blood flow gets re-routed to healthy veins. You will be awake and appropriately comfortable throughout the procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)?

There are several benefits to choosing Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) to treat your varicose veins:

  • Little recovery time
  • Quick and minimally invasive
  • Outpatient procedure/no hospitalization
  • Extremely safe
  • Approximately 98 percent success rate
  • Covered by most insurance plans

What Will My Recovery Be Like After Endovenous Laser Treatment? (EVLT)

You can expect to be out of work for approximately three to five days after your laser ablation, but you won’t be required to stay off your feet. In fact, we encourage you to keep up with your normal activities. You might experience some bruising or mild pain following your treatment, but any discomfort should be minimal. You will also be asked to wear compression stockings or garments during your recovery to help minimize swelling and bruising. We’ll discuss this and any other concerns about your recovery during your consultation, as well as at follow-up appointments.

Am I a Candidate for Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)?

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is often a good choice for patients who have been diagnosed with saphenous vein reflux, or venous insufficiency. This condition occurs when valves become weak or damaged, and blood flows backward instead of back to the heart.

Unfortunately, Endovenous Laser Treatment may not be appropriate for all veins, including veins that have a diameter greater than two centimeters, veins that are extremely twisted, or veins that are too close to the surface of the skin.

After an examination, Dr. Aggarwal will determine whether Endovenous Laser Treatment is right for you. If you are not a good candidate, Dr. Aggarwal will recommend another, more suitable, procedure.

How Much Does Endovenous Laser Treatment Cost?

Most insurance companies and health care plans cover the cost of ELVT. We will discuss your options and receive approval from your insurance provider prior to treatment.
