Laser Treatment of Spider Veins

At the Vein Care Center, we use the Cutera excel V® laser to treat spider veins in patients who reside in Lima, Celina and the region surrounding Auglaize County, OH. When you choose the Vein Care Center to perform laser treatment to correct your spider veins, you can be sure you are receiving the highest quality care.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins and usually appear in a starburst or web-like pattern on the body. They are usually red, purple or blue in color and often appear on the legs and/or face. Although spider veins are usually a cosmetic issue, in some cases, they can indicate a more serious medical condition. Spider veins are more common in women than in men, affecting approximately 75 percent of the female population. Spider veins literally look like little threads that can be seen on the skin. Larger blue-green vessels lie underneath the layer of spider veins, called reticular veins. Often times these veins need treated in order to completely treat the spider vein correctly and effectively.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is an easy, quick and highly effective method of treating spider veins. It is also very safe – laser therapy has been used in medicine for more than three decades. Dr. Aggarwal will use a Cutera excel V® laser. In the state of Ohio, it is against the law for a non-physician to use the laser to treat veins. Laser stands from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The laser is a focused beam of light at the vein, targeting the pigment in the blood. The vein is heated, destroyed and eventually – usually in four to six weeks – is reabsorbed by the body. Laser therapy is usually performed in conjunction with sclerotherapy to achieve best results, but it can be performed alone for those people who do not prefer needles or have an aversion to the medications used for sclerotherapy.

What Will Happen During My Laser Treatment Procedure?

First, you will be asked to put on a pair of goggles to protect your eyes from the intense beam of light emitted by the laser. A cooling gel will be applied to the veins that will be treated. The cooling gel will be spread using a tongue blade or the tip of the laser head. The laser will then be placed on the skin over the spider veins. The heat from the laser specifically targets the coloring in the spider veins, which means the surrounding skin will not be damaged by the laser. Ice may be used to make the treatment more comfortable for you and to effectively cool the surrounding skin around the vein. Ice is typically used on spider veins on legs. Veins on the face, called telangectasia, do not typically need ice or as much cooling because the vessels are much smaller. You will be able to see the veins disappear right in front of your eyes, through your laser goggles. It is safe and we always assure the eyes are protected during all our laser treatments.

After your treatment, the veins will appear to look like small red scratches and the skin is slightly raised in the treated areas. We recommend using Dermaka to reduce the inflammation to the area(s) and we have samples so that you can try this all natural plant-based anti-inflammatory cream. You will need to bring your compression stockings with you at your appointment. After your treatment, you will wear your compression stockings overnight the first night, and then daily for about 1-2 weeks. The literature has shown that for optimal results, wearing your compression stockings for 3 weeks gives the best outcomes. We also recommend no vigorous exercise for the first day following your treatment. Otherwise, this treatment is a “lunch time” procedure and requires no downtime. You will return about every 4 weeks for the duration of your treatment.

Is Laser Treatment Painful?

Most patients describe the sensation they experience during laser treatment as similar to having a rubber band snapped against their skin. While it should not be painful, you will likely experience some mild discomfort. Dr. Aggarwal often times uses an ice roller to aid in the comfort or will place ice on the area(s) to be treated for a few minutes prior to treatment. We have tried using numbing creams on the most sensitive areas (like the ankles), but found it to be less effective than ice. Therefore, we do not use a numbing cream during your treatment.

How Much Does Laser Treatment Cost?

The staff at the Vein Care Center strives to make laser treatments accessible for all our patients. We also accept cash, personal checks, money orders and major credit cards. The treatment of spider veins on the legs is typically not a one-time treatment. At your screening, we discuss the number of treatments (typically patients require 3-5) and will help make the best decision for you. Treatments can be either laser, sclerotherapy or combination of the two.The combination treatment of laser and sclerotherapy is not for all patients; it depends on the size, location and amount of spider veins present. We will discuss the best option for you for optimal results.
